The Art of Candle Care: Making Your Aurelia Last

The memory ring rule

The most important burn is the first one. Wax has a memory: if you blow out the candle before the melted wax pool reaches the edges of the vessel, it will tunnel down the middle for the rest of its life. On the first burn, let it go until the entire surface has liquefied — usually two to four hours.

Trim the wick, every time

Before every burn, trim the cotton wick to about ¼ inch. A long wick produces a large, smoky, flickering flame; a trimmed wick burns clean and steady. For wood wicks, keep them short and brush away any charred edge.

Mind the clock

Don't burn a candle for more than four hours at a stretch. Beyond that, the wick can mushroom and the vessel can overheat. Let it cool, trim, and relight later.

Where you burn matters

Keep candles away from drafts, which cause uneven burning and sooting. Store unlit candles out of direct sunlight to protect the fragrance. Treated well, an Aurelia candle gives you every one of its hours.
